About the Reykjavik Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is the loop east of Reykjavík that joins three sights: Þingvellir, where Iceland’s parliament first met around 930, the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall. Þingvellir has been a national park since 1930 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Join us for a day that most tours run in six to ten hours, with Kerið crater, a lagoon or a snowmobile ride added on many of them. None of the three main sights charges admission, so what you book is the guide, the ride and whatever the fare adds.

Þingvellir National Park

The Alþingi met here from around 930 until 1798. Walk the Almannagjá gorge along the rift, see Öxarárfoss fall into it, and look out over Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake. There is no admission, and a car pays a parking service fee of 1,000 ISK for the day, read from its plate by camera.

Getting There from Reykjavík

Every tour here starts in Reykjavík, at a numbered bus stop, a coach terminal or your hotel door, and hotels inside the city’s restricted driving zone are collected from a nearby bus stop. Driving yourself, Route 36 reaches Þingvellir and Route 35 runs on towards Geysir and Gullfoss, all on paved roads. Check the road conditions each morning before you set off.

When to Go

In June the day lasts about 21 hours, long enough for an afternoon start to finish in daylight. In December you get about 4 hours of daylight, so the morning departures matter more, and the long nights are what an aurora hunt needs. Summer brings the most light and the most visitors; winter brings snow on the canyon walls and quieter paths.

At Þingvellir a car pays a parking service fee of 1,000 ISK for the day, read from its plate by camera, and Kerið charges 700 ISK, which covers the paths, the parking and the toilets. On many tours the Kerið fee is already in the fare: the first chip on each card says so.

Fees, hours and access

Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a hat and gloves, and walking shoes with a good grip. At Geysir stay on the marked paths, because the springs beside them are hot. A swimsuit goes in the bag on the lagoon days, and a towel too where the fare does not include one.

On the 1961-1990 normals at Hæll, the weather station nearest Geysir and Gullfoss, October is the wettest month at 119.2 mm and May the driest at 62.3 mm. January is the coldest, with a mean of −1.8 °C, and July the warmest at 10.6 °C. In June the day lasts about 21 hours, and in December about 4 hours.

Do I need tickets for a Reykjavik Golden Circle tour?

No. Nothing on the route has a gate: Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss charge no admission, so the tour fare is your ticket. The only admissions on the loop are Kerið crater (700 ISK) and the geothermal lagoons, and many fares include them.

Is Þingvellir National Park free?

Entry is free. The park charges a parking service fee instead, 1,000 ISK for a car, read from your plate by camera, and one payment covers its main car parks for the day. On a tour the operator deals with it.

Which Golden Circle tours include the Kerið fee?

Every card here says whether the 700 ISK Kerið fee is in the fare, paid on the day, or not part of the day at all. Most small-group minibus days include it. The big-coach Kerið days visit the crater on morning departures only and skip it from 12:00.

How long is a Reykjavik Golden Circle tour?

The three classic stops take about 6 to 7 hours from Reykjavík. Add Kerið and an extra waterfall and it runs 8 to 9 hours; a lagoon makes it 10 to 11, and the northern lights day runs about 12.5 hours.

How long do tours stop at each sight?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes at Þingvellir, 30 to 90 minutes at Geysir, where many tours break for lunch, 30 to 60 minutes at Gullfoss and 20 to 45 minutes at Kerið. Each card's own listing gives its times.

Should I take a big bus or a small-group minibus?

A coach is the cheapest seat, with stated caps from 49 to 100 people and a fixed meeting point or bus-stop pickup. A minibus caps at 17 to 22 and often collects you closer to your hotel. The stops and the minutes at each are much the same.

Is a private Golden Circle tour worth it?

It is for a group of three or more, or if you want your own start time and extra stops. Private fares are quoted per person and fall as the group grows; one car is priced per group of up to four instead.

Can I see the northern lights on a Golden Circle tour?

Only on the combined day that adds an evening aurora hunt, and its reviews come from September to April. No tour promises a sighting: the Met Office says the lights need dark and partly clear skies, and some nights stay cloudy.

Which Golden Circle tours end at a lagoon?

There are Secret Lagoon, Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon combination days. Most include the lagoon ticket; one private Secret Lagoon day does not (US$35 extra per person). Bring a swimsuit, because towels vary by tour.

Is there an afternoon Golden Circle tour?

Yes. A small-group minibus leaves at 12:00 and still visits Kerið, and two coach operators run afternoon departures. The big-coach Kerið days skip the crater from 12:00, so check the card before you pick a late start.

What should I wear on a Golden Circle tour?

Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat and shoes with grip. Spray at Gullfoss soaks you on a windy day, and the paths can be icy from autumn to spring.

Where do Reykjavik Golden Circle tours pick up?

From your hotel or a numbered city bus stop near it. Coach tours also leave from BSÍ Bus Terminal and from Bus Stop 12 at Höfðatorg, and hotels in the downtown restricted zone are collected from the nearest stop.

Geysir itself is erratic and last erupted in 2016. Its neighbour Strokkur erupts every few minutes, up to 30 metres high, and it is the one you will see.

Lunch among the tomatoes

The Friðheimar greenhouse restaurant serves tomato soup and bread among the plants, daily from 11:30 to 16:00, and some of the minibus and private days stop there.

One more waterfall

Brúarfoss, reached from road 37, costs 750 ISK a car to park, and some of the minibus days add it between Geysir and Þingvellir.

A night on the loop

Selfoss and Laugarvatn both sit on the loop, so a night in either lets a self-driver reach the first stop early, while every tour here starts and ends in Reykjavík.
