Reykjavik Golden Circle Weather, Month by Month
Weather rarely stops a Golden Circle tour, but it decides how the day feels. The figures below are the Icelandic Met Office's own 30-year normals, for inland Hæll and for Reykjavík. Read them before you buy Reykjavik Golden Circle tickets, then pack for the month.
What the weather does to a Golden Circle day
The coaches and minibuses run in almost any weather, and the listings ask you to dress for it. Rain does not cancel a classic tour. What it changes is comfort: the spray at Gullfoss soaks you on a windy day, and in winter it freezes on the steps.
Two extras are weather-sensitive. The snowmobile ride on Langjökull can be cancelled after departure, and the Silfra snorkel depends on conditions at the lake. When the operator calls either off, you are offered another date or a refund. The main tour itself goes ahead.
Wind and daylight matter more than temperature. A calm day at freezing is pleasant. A windy day at 5 °C is not, and in December you have about 4 hours of light to see it all.
Golden Circle weather month by month
Each month gives the mean temperature and the rain and snow at Hæll, the Met Office's nearest normals station to Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið. Hæll does not measure sunshine, so the sunshine hours are Reykjavík's. The figures are the 1961-1990 normals, the only 30-year set the Met Office publishes; recent years have run a little warmer.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages −0.8 °C and gets about 99 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 52 hours of sun. Snow on the rift and ice at Gullfoss. Shoes with grip matter more than a heavy coat.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages −0.7 °C and gets about 92 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 111 hours of sun. Sunshine in the capital doubles on February. The aurora day's reviews still come in.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages 5.9 °C and gets about 62 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 192 hours of sun. The driest month inland and the sunniest in Reykjavík. The Secret Lagoon closes for a few days.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages 8.9 °C and gets about 85 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 161 hours of sun. Daylight peaks at about 21 hours. The Secret Lagoon stays open to 20:00 from 1 June.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages 10.6 °C and gets about 86 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 171 hours of sun. The warmest month, level with Reykjavík. The busiest weeks at every stop, so book ahead.
Golden Circle weather in August
Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages 10.0 °C and gets about 104 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 155 hours of sun. Rain climbs again inland. Reykjavík's August 2026 averaged 10.6 °C, a little above this normal.

Hæll, inland near Flúðir, averages 6.7 °C and gets about 96 mm of rain and snow. Reykjavík logs 125 hours of sun. Birch and heath turn colour in the rift. The aurora day's reviews begin this month.

Pick summer for long days and mild stops. Pick winter for snow on the rift, a frozen Gullfoss and the chance of an aurora evening, and accept short days and icy paths. Spring is the driest, quietest window. Autumn is the wettest, but the colour in the rift and the first dark nights make up for it.

Best time of day
In winter, go in the morning. With as little as 4 hours of light, a morning departure puts the stops in the daylight, and the drive back runs in the dark. An afternoon tour in December sees most of the loop by headlight.
In summer, time of day matters less, because the light lasts into the night. An afternoon start avoids the morning coaches at Þingvellir and Geysir. Whatever the season, Gullfoss looks its best in low sun, which in winter means the middle of the day.
